Abstract:
Ellagitannin polyphenols are a class of natural phenolic compounds widely found in a variety of foods such as raspberries, strawberries and pomegranates, and exhibit a variety of biological activities such as anti-tumor and anti-inflammatory effects. However, studies have shown that ellagic polyphenols have low bioabsorption in vivo, which may be closely related to their structural complexity and large molecular weight. A systematic review of the bioabsorption and metabolism of ellagic polyphenols has not yet been conducted in China, and the mechanism by which their physiological activities are affected by bioabsorption and metabolism remains unclear. Based on the different types of motif linkages on the glucose nucleus of ellagic polyphenols, a new classification method is proposed in this paper to facilitate the understanding of the relationship between the bioabsorption of ellagic polyphenols and their characteristic motifs. On this basis, this paper systematically reviews the metabolic pathways of ellagitannin polyphenols and their influencing factors, focusing on the effects of physiological conditions and factors such as chemical structure and intake dose on the absorption and metabolism of ellagitannin polyphenols and their metabolites in vivo, and analyzes how the structural features of ellagitannin polyphenols affect their physiological activities from the perspective of metabolic mechanisms. This review provides new perspectives and new ideas for the study of the metabolism and functional activities of ellagic polyphenols..
