Abstract:
Monobenzyl fumarate was synthesized from benzyl alcohol and maleic anhydride using anhydrous aluminum chloride as the catalyst. The reaction products were structurally identified by means of melting point measurement, Infrared spectrum (IR) and 1H-NMR. The effects of malor ratio reagents, esterification temperature and time, isomerization catalyst, and isomerization catalyst dosage on monobenzyl fumarate yield were studied. Anhydrous aluminum chloride was shown as the best isomerization catalyst and the optimal reaction conditions were determined as follows molar ratio of maleic anhydride to benzyl alcohol (for 2 g anhydrous aluminum chloride) 0.1/0.1, reaction temperature 60 ℃, reaction time 3 h under reflus condition and further reaction time 2 h after adding isomerization catalyst. Under such conditions, the yield of monobenzyl fumarate reached 74.5%. The experiment of antimicrobial activity showed that monobenzyl fumarate exhibited high anticimicrobial activity.
